How would you recover?
If you had the misfortune to receive that phone call informing you that your premises had burnt to the ground, losing your vital business information, you could spend weeks, months, reconstructing this data. In the worst-case, you might not be able to reconstruct it at all.
You can take some simple but vital steps to safeguard your data, and ensure that you can retrieve and restore your computer records should you suffer a loss. Some suggestions include:
1. Use alternate power supply i.e. UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
2. Protect against power surges, these could destroy your hard drive or modem
3. Use adequate virus protection one, that will not compromise your computer performance
4. Use a strong password and change it frequently
5. Back up your data, check your back up has worked!
6. Keep your backup disks or tapes in a safe place (fire/flood proof or off premises)
7. Develop and test emergency operating procedures
8. Allow business use only. Under no circumstances allow employees or colleagues to load personal software into your business computers
9. Maintain your IT rooms the right temperature, not too hot or too cold
10. Give your computer periodic checkups & keep it clean
It can't happen to me!
Don't think "it can't happen to me!" It can and probably will. Computers are machines and, even in the absence of natural disasters and computer crime, machines can suddenly break down for inexplicable reasons. Better to invest time and attention in protecting your business information assets.
It's comforting to know that, when you're searching for the cause of a breakdown, your vital business information is safe. Knowing that you can get the system up and running again with minimum effort and expense is equally reassuring.
